An unsuspecting car thief finds himself incarcerated and on death row for a vicious murder that has shaken a peaceful little town.  Rodger Harris enters Morsgrove Prison leaving behind all hopes and aspirations in turn for a world filled with deafening silence and unnerving brutality.   Rehabilitation is instead substituted for sick and violent games organized by the guards to simply pass the time.

As Rodger sits in silence, unable to talk for fear of punishment, new and interesting characters enter in his life sparking inspiration and renewing hope.  Rodger's attorney soon gets a break in his case but after a series of unforeseeable events, Rodger inadvertently escapes and is on the run.  Weeks later Rodger is caught and returned to Morsgrove Prison where the guards take turns inflicting months of unrelenting punishment.

Through the help of an older inmate, Rodger learns to read and finds an escape from life's harsh realities in the majestic worlds painted by these books.  Rodger transitions from student to teacher and begins to rehabilitate the other prisoners, while also changing into a man he is finally happy with.  Weeks later an unexpected visitor meets with Rodger and an unbreakable bond is formed.  They marry and together they adamantly fight Rodger's murder charge.  New DNA evidence emerges that could potentially clear Rodger but the execution date is set and time is of the essence to prove his innocence before the lever is pulled.
